So why all this good info about Bill White?
Because he is one of the internet's biggest liars and slanderers of people.
History: Let Dr Trevor Cullen of Edith Cowan University explain:
"I met Bill White when I was teaching at the Divine Word University in Papua New Guinea. Bill White was also teaching there, until he was dismissed from that employment for acting in a threatening and provocative way towards other staff. Since his dismissal from the University, Bill White has begun a campaign to discredit many of his former colleagues, of which I am one.
When I left DWU, I went to Queensland University in Brisbane where I studied and successfully completed my doctoral studies in journalism. While there, the staff and University executive were frequently sent individual email messages by Bill White. These emails, among other things, accused me of a variety of fraudulent activities, which were entirely unfounded. In addition, he published false Web pages about me on the Internet, which can be down loaded by anyone at anytime.

Bill White has inflicted great harm on my professional work, status and character via emails, websites, web pages and domain names. His vindictive hate campaign which began in April 1997 has also injured the reputation of other highly regarded individuals who have supported me against Bill White's constant (and sometimes daily) defamatory and damaging attacks.
As a result of Bill White's prolonged and vitriolic campaign, I decided to take legal action against him in the Supreme Court of Western Australia. On 9 December 2002 the Supreme Court ruled in my favour and the process of assessing damages is currently underway. "
Whether an Australian damages award can be enforced in a U.S. court is however extremely dubious. The precedent set in the Yahoo case is not encouraging. Basically, the whole case would probably have to be re-tried in the U.S. courts. So the hurt to Dr Cullen looks likely to go unredressed.
HUNDREDS of innocent people in Australia, Papua New Guinea, other areas in the southern Pacific region as well as North America and Europe are being harassed and defamed by notorious Los Angeles-based cyber-stalker and liar Bill White.
His pernicious activities have been exposed by leading United States newspaper The Los Angeles Times (15th June, 2003), by Western Australia's The Sunday Times (27th July, 2003), and by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's national television current affairs program, the 7.30 Report (12th August, 2003).
KERRY O'BRIEN: While the Internet has been hailed as the ultimate medium of free speech, it does, as we know, have a dark side.
For instance, cyberstalkers are a new phenomenon of web users with a grievance and the time to pursue vendettas on the net.
In one such case, it's been estimated hundreds of individuals and institutions around the Pacific are being targeted by a lone cyberstalker, sitting in Los Angeles and continuing to operate after five years with apparent impunity.
One of this person's targets, an academic in Perth, has finally had enough and is trying to stop his tormentor through a Western Australian court.
Mick O'Donnell reports.
MICK O'DONNELL: The Divine Word University in Madang, Papua New Guinea ... it's a bustling place run by the Catholic Church and with a good reputation.
But the slightest association with this university has been enough for many individuals and institutions around the world to be targeted in a bizarre one-man campaign of cyber smear.
TREVOR CULLEN, JOURNALISM LECTURER: It's as if I'm held to ransom to the postings that this guy has about me.
JOHN HENNINGHAM, JOURNALISM LECTURER: I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
You know ... you just feel you've been violated.
MICK O'DONNELL: So really, on the Net, he has stolen your identity?
TREVOR CULLEN: He has, yes.
So he's taken my name, yes.
MICK O'DONNELL: These are just two of the hundreds of victims targeted by cyberstalker Bill White.
An obscure retired lawyer, White sits at his computer in a cheap apartment in downtown Los Angeles creating websites viciously defaming his victims.
JOHN HENNINGHAM: Oh, there are hundreds.
I mean, when I began to look at it and look at the web of pages that he's set up and the number of victims that he's had and all these people I've never heard of who were victims of his website ... missionaries, there were journalists, businessmen, there were other scholars, lecturers and so on, students ... a whole lot of people in Papua New Guinea.
MICK O'DONNELL: White's campaign of Internet venom stems from his brief time here at the Divine Word University, where he worked as a volunteer teacher in 1996.
After complaints from students and alleged violence against another staffer, White was kicked out.
Soon, White began his vengeance in the form of abusive emails and defamatory websites attacking the university and anyone who defends it.
TREVOR CULLEN: I've been to the police, the Federal Police about it, I've written to Google, to other search engines, I've written to the Internet service providers that host this material.
I've had no luck.
MICK O'DONNELL: Trevor Cullen is a quiet and unassuming priest who once worked at the Divine Word University in PNG.
He became one of White's main targets five years ago after he wrote to an Internet company to complain about White's attacks on the uni.
TREVOR CULLEN: Unfortunately what happened is the webmaster published my letter on that forum and literally within two days I had my first abusive email from Bill White.
MICK O'DONNELL: And that's the pattern.
Anyone who challenges White or defends the PNG university or its supporters becomes a target.
Now fellow academics at the two universities where Trevor Cullen had worked in Australia have also become targets.
JOHN HENNINGHAM: He sets up a website in a person's name and then he defames them.
He prints a whole lot of material about them, a lot of allegations and statements that he claims are true, which in fact are totally false and defamatory.
MICK O'DONNELL: When he was Professor of Journalism at the University of Queensland, John Henningham was inundated with emails from White making false claims about Trevor Cullen.
JOHN HENNINGHAM: Having verified Trevor's credentials I sent an email back to White to point out that, yes, he did have a Masters degree and he was a PhD student with us and perhaps he would like to apologise to Trevor Cullen.
And that was the one message I've ever sent to Bill White, but the emails kept coming.
TREVOR CULLEN: He actually uses my email name so that when people receive emails, it comes in as Trevor Cullen, but in fact when you click on and open the email, it's actually from him.
JOHN HENNINGHAM: Most recently, earlier this year, I had an email that appeared to be from Trevor Cullen, in fact it was from Bill White who was disguising himself as Trevor Cullen to say have a look at this website.
And here was a website in my name which I looked at and it was dreadful to see this sort of thing about yourself on a web page.
MICK O'DONNELL: Other targets of White's hate campaign are better known.
The diplomat leading Australia's effort in the Solomons, Nick Warner, became a subject of the Internet defamation when he was High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea.
Warner's actually defamed in connection with the Australian Government aid agency, AusAID.
In fact, if you type in AusAID.org on your computer, you'll come through not to the official Government site, but to one of White's hate sites.
AusAID itself has taken no action, but others can't afford to be so complacent.
SIR PETER BARTER, MINISTER FOR INTER-GOVERNMENT RELATIONS: I have no doubt that this particular facility will become Papua New Guinea's prime university in future years.
MICK O'DONNELL: Papua New Guinea Government minister Sir Peter Barter became a target because of his association with the uni.
Barter says the numerous websites now attacking his tourist business have cost him millions of dollars.
When he went to the US to try to stop White, the FBI said it could do nothing.
JOHN HENNINGHAM: It seems that he's acting within the law within the United States.
He'd have to be sued in the US.
The advice I get is that it would be a long and costly battle.
MICK O'DONNELL: Worried that White's attacks might affect his small business, a private journalism school, John Henningham has fought back.
JOHN HENNINGHAM: I set up in self-defence a website explaining Bill White.
It's called: billwhitecyberstalker.com And I explained Bill White, I explained his methods, so that anyone doing their research, they will find Bill White's hate sites, but they'll also find the site that I've set up in self-defence.
MICK O'DONNELL: In Perth, now at Edith Cowan University, Trevor Cullen had had enough when he saw his colleagues there become targets.
TREVOR CULLEN: But when I saw other people were being attacked so viciously and with so much malice, I felt I had to act.
MICK O'DONNELL: Trevor Cullen has taken defamation action in the WA Supreme Court.
His lawyer, Jeremy Malcolm, is hoping the court order he's won here will help convince Internet service providers in the US to remove White's hate sites.
JEREMY MALCOLM, DEFAMATION LAWYER: It will just provide some independent legal documentation to verify what we're saying about the falsity of the claims that are made on the websites.
MICK O'DONNELL: The 7:30 Report exchanged emails with Bill White, but he soon became abusive, refusing an interview unless we took up his conspiracy.
None of the large institutions attacked have yet taken legal action.
TREVOR CULLEN: Maybe down the line they might have to act, but, you know, this guy gives them great power to do this.
At the moment he seems untouchable."
